How to Choose the Right Promotional Items for Your Brand

Promotional products are excellent marketing tools, but the market has so many options that it can be overwhelming to figure out how to choose the right one.

Promotional products are excellent marketing tools, but the market has so many options that it can be overwhelming to figure out how to choose the right one. When you go to any trade show, it seems like everyone has the same pens, water bottles, phone pops, or whatever item is trendy that season. You want something that will help your brand stand out from the rest. If you need help narrowing it down, use these five questions to guide your decision.

Who Will Receive Your Promotional Items?

The biggest part of marketing is knowing who your target customer is. The more you know about them, the more likely you are to choose an item that will be useful and kept handy to remind them of your business. Think about when you want them reminded of your product or service and what items they might need at that time.

What Event Will You Need Promotional Items For?

Both the type of event and where you expect to be at that event should contribute to this decision. A trendy item for trade shows is a tote bag because people can put all the other items they are picking up inside your branded tote and carry them around. However, if you’re two-thirds of the way up the aisle and every table before you have tote bags, your bag may end up inside someone else’s tote. If your table is near a water fountain, a nice water bottle might spark more interest instead.

When Will You Need Your Items?

Most promotional products are custom made or custom printed so you need to plan for them in advance. If you are deciding the week before your trade show that you need a new item, your selection will be limited.

Will Your Items Be Useful?

Depending on the type of item, it may be with the person for hours to years. Pens seem to be in a constant flux between missing and found. Cups are also useful, but they sometimes get pushed to the back of the cabinet and forgotten. Shirts and hats may end up in circulation for years, being worn periodically. Your goal is to make the person think about your company when they need your services. If they’re likely to be considering it while getting dressed on the weekend, a hat or tee shirt is great. If they’re more likely to be thinking about it at work (when they need web development), something for their desk is likely a better bet. Above all, a useful item is more likely to be kept than a trinket.
